Abraham Paul Kriel started a Children's Home in Langlaagte in September 1902. The Home thrived under his leadership and funds were brought in because of his travels abroad and throughout the country. After a long illness, he died in 1928 leaving behind a legacy that touched the lives and souls of many people all over the world.

The Abraham Kriel Children’s Home in Potchefstroom was opened in 1956 due to the growing demand to accommodate children in need. All the homes around the country became independent and today, although they share the name and offer the same services, are responsible for their own finances and management.

Two trademarks about Abraham Kriel were that he was a devout Christian and hated the word "orphan". At Abraham Kriel Potchefstroom we follow the same principles that were way ahead of Oom Abraham's time.
